What Are Fiber Optics?

Fiber optics is a system of data transfer defined by fiber optic cables. These cables are bundles of many tiny strands of glass or plastic. These glass strands are almost as thin as human hair, and they can carry information at high speeds for long distances, which makes them the ideal material for telecommunication companies like your local internet service provider.

Each strand is typically made of three different components:

  • Core – the innermost part of the fiber optic strand is the glass through which light travels.
  • Cladding – the next layer of the strand helps keep light within the core, which we will explain in more detail later in this blog.
  • Buffer coating – this protective layer is typically made of plastic and serves to prevent anything from interfering with the inner components of the fiber optic strand.

There are a few different types of fiber optics, often split into “single-mode” fibers and “multi-mode” fibers. Multi-mode fibers have slightly larger codes and transmit data using infrared light generated by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The efficacy of fiber optics depends on a few important properties of light. When you were younger, you may have experimented on your own or in a science class with flashlights and mirrors. Light travels in straight lines for long distances, and with mirrors, you can redirect that light at angles to point in whatever direction you need. Fiber optics harnesses this principle and shrinks it down. The cladding of each fiber acts like a series of mirrors, redirecting the light signal indefinitely and keeping it confined to the fiber.

This is what makes fiber optics such a strong choice for telecommunication purposes: it can carry information for long distances and the fibers can be bent and coiled and manipulated without significantly affecting the light traveling inside. The signal can and will degrade eventually, but that depends on the wavelength of light and the purity of the glass, and manufacturers work hard to make the glass in fiber optics crystal clear.
